Molly E. Holzschlag, often hailed as the Fairy Godmother of the Web, is a remarkable figure who has dedicated her career to the enhancement and evolution of the Open Web. Her work spans diverse aspects, from participating in W3C Working Group Meetings, delivering enlightening speeches, conducting Open Web Conferences, to running instructional seminars. Notably, she held the helm of the Web Standards Project during the most challenging period of web browser incompatibility in history.
Her pioneering efforts with the Project led to two face-to-face meetings with Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, to address the compliance issues of Internet Explorer 6. A prolific writer, Holzschlag has authored or co-authored 35 books, including the acclaimed “The Zen of CSS Design” in collaboration with CSS Zen Garden creator Dave Shea. She has also written countless articles and interviews, while producing numerous audio and video learning materials. A selection of her titles includes "Professional Web Design: Theory and Technique on the Cutting Edge," "Web by Design: The Complete Guide," "Cascading Style Sheets: The Designer's Edge," and "The Zen of CSS Design: Visual Enlightenment for the Web".
Molly's contributions have been recognized with numerous awards such as the Fluent Web Platform Award, the .NET Award for Outstanding Contributions, and a U.S. Congressional Special Recognition in 2016 for her significant technological contributions to the nation and state. Those familiar with O’Reilly will recall her time as the Executive Editor of Web Review during its transition from Songline Studios to CMP.
Furthermore, Holzschlag has made considerable contributions to web standards. She conceived and led the first five years of Open Web Camp, a free event in the Silicon Valley that ran from 2009-2013. This event centered on Open Web technologies, web design, and accessibility. During 2004–2006, she served as the group lead for the Web Standards Project (WaSP), a coalition that urged browser manufacturers such as Microsoft, Opera, and Netscape to support modern web standards.
In the realm of education, she has worked for Knowbility, teaching classes on Open Web technologies such as HTML5 and ARIA. She has also taught webmaster courses for several universities and colleges, including the University of Arizona, University of Georgia, University of Phoenix, New School University, and Pima Community College.
On a personal note, Molly was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in 2014 and has since spoken about the issues with health care finance in the United States.
